For our next book club, we’re going to read The Hole by José Revueltas (New Directions), translated by Amanda Hopkinson and Sophie Hughes.
For our quarantine book clubs (which are obviously very different than the book-to-film clubs we were hosting in the store) we’ve been looking at shorter books, 150 pages or fewer––the kind of book you can read in a single sitting if you really wanted to. That allows us to have book clubs more frequently, for those of you looking to engage more often. The Hole is fewer than 80 pages and it’s meant to be read in a single sitting because the plot unravels in real time.
Here’s a description from the back cover: “José Revueltas (1914-1976) was a lifelong political dissident. In the late 1960’s, he spent two and a half years as a prisoner in the infamous Palacio de Lecumberri, a penitentiary in Mexico City. There, in the space of weeks, Revueltas wrote The Hole, using the real prison as the setting of his novella. ”
And, to boot, it’s dedicated to Pablo Neruda. Sold? Sold.
This book club will be held on Friday, May 22 at 3:00 PM via Zoom. All participants who sign up via sulfurbooks.com/events will receive the login information.
