A Poetry Smorgasbord: Exploring Form, Content, and Meaning
In this class we’ll gather to read poetry, exploring how the form and content intertwine to create meaning, and write our own poetry, experimenting with different forms and how form impacts our own thinking. We’ll look at sonnets, blank verse, free verse, and other forms from poets ranging from Shakespeare, Keats, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning to Wanda Coleman, Mary Oliver, and Langston Hughes.

The class will meet on Zoom for four 90-minute sessions on Tuesdays (7/7, 7/14/, 7/21, 7/28) at 6 p.m. Students will receive the readings the Sunday before each session, but we’ll also read together and aloud to hear how the form and content interact. And we’ll write our own exploratory poems during class to see how form impacts our expression.

Sharon E. Rhodes has a PhD in English literature from the University of Rochester. Since graduating she has taught a variety of courses from English Literature surveys to queer theory. She now translates Danish literature (prose and poetry) and writes her own poetry.
